Santiago, Mendoza and beyond

Hola from Valprisio, Chile.

Hasn´t been too much to report lately. We stayed in Santiago for 2 nights at a great hostel (Ecohostel) and explored the surrounding areas. Not much really to report regarding Santiago, it is literally just another city. The highlights for us were the great supermarkets and having our clothes washed and dryed for us!

From Santiago we took a couple of days out and crossed the Andes and the Argentinian border (minus fruit and salami this time) into Mendoza. Unfortunately this time Adrienne chose a terrible hostel which did ruin our experience a little of Mendoza. A bad area, very young people and all you can drink free wine was a recipe for no sleep for the three nights we were there. Other than that we had a great time, visited an all you can eat bbq meat restaurant where we both managed 3 servings of bbq meat and 3 servings of desert! Phil was disappointed not to be able to try guinea pig (Adrienne was not!).

After Adriennes 2nd desert she was in such a feeding frenzy that cream and caramel managed to somehow get on her face and all through her hair. Mendoza is famous for vineyards, so it would have been wrong not to do a wine tour. We met some lovely Irish people and decided to do it ourselves by hiring bicycles and riding around the vineyards. Was a fantastic day although we were very sensible to save the chocolate factory and chocolate liquers until last as they served up a shot of Absinthe as well. A wobbly 2 minute bike ride back to the hire company and then they served us up more wine - fabulous! No mud pools or other bruises were obtained during this section of the trip!

From Mendoza we travelled to Valparaiso (via Santiago) which is a port 1.5 hours from Santiago where houses are stacked along large mountains facing the sea. We have spent today exploring the town and a nearby town of Vina del Mar. So far the highlight has been being stopped by the police to tell us to turn around and not walk any further as it was dangerous with pick pocketers etc. We leave tomorrow!

Time on Bus = 47 hours
Time on Plane = 23 hours

Cost of Diet Coke = 690 Pesos (less than 2 USD) (Adrienne has managed to cut down her consumption to at the most one a week - lucky as the budget is tight)

Next stop after a quick return to Santiago is Quito and the Galapagos Islands - yippee

Now that is a proper BBQ. Perhaps build one next to the Norse hot tub?

Looks like fun! Maybe you should have offered a little $ to the border patrol... you might have saved your salami?! Lucy
